The Government of the Dominion of Canada issues the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf annually, which is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. As legal tender, the face value is 50 Canadian dollars. The content is 24 karat with a fineness of .9999. The standard Candaian coin weighs 1 troy ounce. Denominations include 1 gram (50 cents), 1/20 oz ($1), 1/10 oz ($5), ¼ ounce ($10) and ½ oz ($20). The obverse features a profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Canada with the Canadian maple leaf on the reverse. As of 2015, the coin also has security features.

The timing on your gold purchase is a bit more complicated, since you will pay more for gold and gold-related stocks when gold prices are high. That doesn't diminish the diversification benefit over the long term, but high gold prices can mean lackluster returns over the near term. Trying to time your entry point, however, leads to market timing judgment calls that are best avoided by most, if not all, investors.

Both physical gold bullion and physical silver bullion offer a way to diversity your assets from the traditional paper monetary financial system. Precious metals are an alternative investment with real, inherent value. It is a hard asset, finite, and can't be printed or reproduced. There is a limited amount able to be mined. It has stood the test of time and gold bullion has been traded in various methods for hundreds of years. The gold products we offer are almost entirely investment grade purity.  Investment grade gold is defined as having a purity of .995 or greater and thus our gold coins are mostly dependent on the gold spot price derived from the financial markets.  SD Bullion offers a full line of gold coins and bars to meet your investment needs. Our most popular gold bullion products include American Gold Eagles, Gold Buffalos, Canadian Gold Maples, Gold Krugerrand, Austrian Gold Philharmonic, Chinese Gold Pandas, and US Gold. SD Bullion also carries gold bars in varying sizes including generic 1 oz gold bars and kilo gold bars.

That said, the built-in wide margins that result from the streaming approach provide an important buffer for these businesses. That has allowed the profitability of streamers to hold up better than miners' when gold prices are falling. This is the key factor that gives streaming companies an edge as an investment. They provide exposure to gold, they offer growth potential via the investment in new mines, and their wide margins through the cycle provide some downside protection when gold prices fall. That combination is hard to beat.

For those that appreciate how gold works to improve investment reward vs volatility/risk in a portfolio, it is recommended that a minimum of 10% of an investment portfolio should be in gold, or other precious metals. However, investors often purchase more when economic or geopolitical uncertainty in the markets and around the world rises. Mathematically, “How Much Gold” over time would have suggested preferred diversification is close to 10%, but certainly your preferred mix of assets is dictated by your personal views and preferences.
As mentioned above, the market for Precious Metals generally moves independent from stocks and bonds. If you buy physical Gold, you can balance your portfolio so you need not fear the NYSE. In an economic slowdown, your Precious Metals may provide a comforting, stable point among your investments. You can easily look up historical Gold prices to see this balance for yourself.
Goldline International, a major dealer, has come under fire by U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) for the high markups it charges on such coins. For example, Goldline and some other dealers push a French gold coin, the 20-franc “Rooster.” Weiner says Goldline charges 69% more than the melt value of the Rooster, which has no numismatic value.
One of the most affordable ways to get gold is the Lady Liberty round, made of .9999 pure (24 karats) gold in one-tenth troy ounce. They are not legal tender and the goal is to provide the buyer with more gold for the money versus fractional coin bullion. Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse with the image of a descending bald eagle on the reverse.

Counterfeiting is an age-old problem when it comes to investing in precious metals. Because of this, many mints have introduced markers or counterfeit-proof features, like the Mint Mark SI™ feature by Sunshine Minting or the Geiger Bar UV light-stampings. Coins are comparably the safest instrument for investing in silver as government mints produce them, and their legal tender status ensures that the anti-counterfeit measures are as stringent as possible.

Compare dealer prices. Aside from the proof version, the U.S. Mint doesn’t sell American Eagle gold coins directly. But there is a dealer location tool on the Mint’s website. Comparing prices among dealers is easy, too, because coins sell at a premium above gold’s spot price, or its delivery price as a commodity. You can find the spot price on precious metals exchange sites such as or
There are thousands of gold products on the market, but the list of well-known bullion products from reputable mints and refineries is short. Generally, you want to buy gold coins or bars from one of the major national mints or larger private refineries. You will notice these are the only products we feature on the SchiffGold website. (Read more about our product policies here.)

Over the past decade, the technology sector has accounted for more than 380 tonnes of gold demand annually, a significant figure in itself and almost 13% ahead of central bank net purchases during the same period. Yet gold’s role in this vibrant and growing industry is broadly unrecognised and often misunderstood. This edition of Gold Investor focuses on technology, analysing gold’s current use and future potential across a range of applications.
Though this interview will help you start safely on the road to gold ownership, it is just an overview. If you would like more detailed information, I would recommend my book, The ABCs of Gold Investing: How to Protect and Build Your Wealth With Gold which covers the who, what, when, where, why and how of gold ownership in detail. But if you don't actually make use of them, these bars can be costly to liquidate once removed from storage. You may encounter assay, refining, or just handling fees in trying to liquidate that size gold bullion bar. It's much more difficult and time-consuming to liquidate gold bullion in a single chunk that is worth over $100,000 than it is to sell the same amount of gold bullion in more convenient and tradable sizes.
Instead of buying gold itself, investors can buy the companies that produce the gold as shares in gold mining companies. If the gold price rises, the profits of the gold mining company could be expected to rise and the worth of the company will rise and presumably the share price will also rise. However, there are many factors to take into account and it is not always the case that a share price will rise when the gold price increases. Mines are commercial enterprises and subject to problems such as flooding, subsidence and structural failure, as well as mismanagement, negative publicity, nationalization, theft and corruption. Such factors can lower the share prices of mining companies.
Silver coins are sold at a premium above Silver spot prices because of their unique designs and limited availability. Coins are usually sold in brilliant uncirculated condition, having not been used as actual currency. Once a coin loses its luster, it begins to lose its status in terms of condition. The highest quality Silver bullion coins are known as proof coins. Popular for their intricate designs, proof coins are struck more than once, which leads to their brilliant shine.
Although governments have decided it's easier to be off the gold standard than on it, that doesn't change the central issue that backs gold's intrinsic value and safe-haven status: There's only so much gold in the world. The gold that's above ground being used in some fashion is estimated to be around 190,000 metric tons. The amount of gold in the ground that can be economically mined today is notably less, at roughly 54,000 metric tons.
A. Traditionally, wealthy, aristocratic European and Asian families have kept a strong percentage of their assets in gold as a protective factor. The long term economic picture for the United States has changed enormously over the past several years. As a result, that same philosophy has taken hold here particularly among those interested in preserving their wealth both for themselves and for their families from one generation to the next. In recent years, we have helped a good many family trusts diversify with gold coins and bullion at the advice of their portfolio managers.

You may remember seeing these large gold bullion bars in movies such as "Three Kings," and the old James Bond movie "Goldfinger." Bars like these make up most of the world's gold bullion owned by governments and central banks. These are the "London good delivery" gold bullion bars of approximately 400 troy ounce size, refined and cast by the various private refiners worldwide, and accepted for 'delivery' into London and other major gold bullion markets.
Gold is actually quite plentiful in nature but is difficult to extract. For example, seawater contains gold -- but in such small quantities it would cost more to extract than the gold would be worth. So there is a big difference between the availability of gold and how much gold there is in the world. The World Gold Council estimates that there are about 190,000 metric tons of gold above ground being used today and roughly 54,000 metric tons of gold that can be economically extracted from the Earth based on current extraction technology. But advances in extraction methods or materially higher gold prices could shift that number. For example, gold has been discovered near undersea thermal vents in quantities that suggest it might be worth extracting if gold prices rose high enough.
The Chinese Mint is the official sovereign mint of the People’s Republic of China and produces the nation’s official gold bullion coin. Introduced in 1982 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins in .999 pure gold with the image of a Giant Panda on the reverse. In 1983, the Chinese Mint increased the offering to feature a 1/20 oz coin as well. Designs for the Chinese Gold Panda include:

These different weights of bars will carry prices depending on a number of factors. First, the spot price of gold--the current market price at which gold is being bought and sold--will drastically effect how much a gold bar will go for. What's more, the refinery that has minted the bar factors in to the overall price. Some refineries have a more distinguished reputation and therefore will charge more for their gold bars. The purity of fineness of the gold itself will also come into play. Gold fineness is measured in karats. You can find gold fineness ranked as 333 which equates to 8 karats, all the way to 24 karat 999.999 fine gold, which is the purest gold bar possible.
When people buy physical gold, they can store it themselves, have someone store it for them or do a combination of both. Some people keep it in a home safe, storage boxes, or in coin capsules at home. Others store it in a safe deposit box at the bank or other secure location. Safe deposit boxes at the bank are affordable but may offer limited access, based on the hours of the financial institution. The bank does not insure the contents of the box, which means separate insurance should be purchased.

Perhaps the biggest factor in the growth of silver mining, however, was the Spanish discovery of The New World in 1492. Production in the Americas by far exceeded anything that had been done previously. Silver mining continued to grow and flourish, and eventually new discoveries were made in other parts of the world such as China, Canada, Australia and Africa. In the past century, the technological advances made by humans have helped drive silver production to new heights and are ever increasing its demand. In fact, global mine production of silver now averages 671 million troy ounces per year!

Karat weight (K or kt) is a traditional fraction-based system used to denote the fineness of gold, with one karat being equal to 1/24 part of pure gold in an alloy. With the precision of modern assaying techniques, however, the fineness of gold ingots and bullion is more likely to appear as a decimal measurement. In this system, pure gold would be denoted as 1.000 fine. However, since absolutely pure gold is very soft and therefore not suitable for coinage or ingots, it is generally accepted worldwide that anything above .999 fine qualifies as 24K. Below is a karat weight to fineness conversion chart.

Silver coins are no longer produced for circulation in the United States, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to find silver coins to buy. Bullion silver coins are available from sovereign mints around the world and a select few private mints contracted to work with foreign reserve banks. These coins range from annual-issue, investment-grade silver bullion coins to limited-edition proof silver coins. There's no shortage of variety when it comes to buying silver coins. You only have to decide which coins catch your eye and are worthy of your investment!
